I painted this landscape on a spare canvas which had been lying in my studio for years. I had just taken a walk through a field which had been utterly devastated by fire. There was nothing left. It was still smouldering. I tried to recreate the sights and smells that I had experienced on that very hot day in Cape Town. I would eventually sell it to a keen buyer but it hang in my home for a long time before I could finally let it go.

As part of my growing fascination with Turner-esque paintings of the English countryside in winter, the emergence of “Ashen” unfolded gradually over the course of a month. While initially intending to continue refining and shaping this piece, a realization dawned on me—I found a certain allure in its current state, capturing a moment frozen in time. The deliberate use of charcoals and Payne’s grays allowed me to craft a composition that resonates with the stark, cold essence of winter. The subtle interplay of shadows and highlights brings forth the melancholic beauty inherent in the desolation of a winter landscape. Each stroke serves as a deliberate expression, a visual symphony echoing the tranquility and harshness intertwined within the wintry scene.

The young, professional couple who owns this contemporary home commissioned me to paint a large piece of art.

They had seen my work before. They decided to combine elements of some of my previous paintings with some of their own ideas. The end result was a painting which was atmospheric as well as oceanic and it was a great addition to their home.

This painting came about purely through experimentation with colour and mediums. The canvas had been in the studio for months and had been covered in reds and browns. I placed it back onto the easel and decided to freshen it up with cool colours. The trees in this particular painting originated from drips of colour and the green seemed to work well by adding drama to it.

This was a beautiful home on an exclusive golf estate. It has been superbly decorated in natural materials. Loads of raw wood. I kept the piece subtle so as not to overpower the space and echoed elements in the natural wood coffee table in the painting.
